What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary health care that emphasizes prevention and increasing vitality through the use of research based and time tested natural approaches. The focus is to identify the underlying causes of disease. Therapeutic modalities may include clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, counseling, Scenar pain management along with referring for integration of conventional approaches if needed.
Naturopathic medical practice involve six principles:
-
First Do No Harm
-
The Healing Power of Nature
-
Identify the Cause
-
Address the Whole Person
-
Doctor as Teacher
-
Prevention
What education do medically trained naturopathic doctors receive?
Accredited naturopathic doctors (NDs) are primary care physicians who have attended 4-6 years of naturopathic medical graduate school with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and promoting wellness They are clinically trained, and work in all aspects of family health — from pediatric to geriatric care. Educated in all of the same basic sciences as a medical doctor (MD) involving dissecting cadavers, drawing blood, pharmacology, and radiographic interpretation. Naturopathic medical training also includes botanical medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, osteopathic/myofascial manipulation, and counseling. Naturopathic doctors bring a medical perspective along with a holistic point of view and understand the strengths/weaknesses of conventional care while seeing a person as mind, body, and spirit rather than just lab values and symptoms. Just like MDs, naturopathic physicians must pass rigorous professional board exams before they can be licensed by a state or jurisdiction. During the medical program, naturopathic students intern in clinical settings under the close supervision of licensed professionals. Because NDs view natural remedies as complementary primary care, they cooperate with other medical professionals, referring patients to (and receiving patients from) conventional medical doctors, surgeons and other specialists when appropriate. All states with licensure laws require a resident course of at least four years and 4,100 hours of study from a college or university recognized by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). At this time Missouri is an unlicensed state which prevents contracting with insurance companies and allows people who get online degrees to call themselves Naturopaths or Naturopathic doctors.
