My favorite multivitamin.

Updated: Jul 8, 2019

My favorite multivitamin contains serrapeptase (shown to reduce inflammation), probiotics, and optimal forms of B vitamins.

There are a lot of multivitamins to choose from.

I stick with the motto: "Food is medicine."

My preference is an organic food based multivitamins.

Organically grown means that plants are raised without synthetic chemicals.

Many low quality and low cost multi's are composed of isolated nutrients. Individual nutrients are combined with fillers (excipients) to keep ingredients moving thru machines and put into capsule.  Ideally, we put into the body forms of nutrients that are best utilized, such as folate to build our red blood cells and aid detoxification, rather than synthetic folic acid, and leave out unnecessary ingredients that can burden the liver.

There are a number of non-organic food based multivitamins in the market or from multilevel marketing.   I have tried many multivitamins while working in the natural food industry the past 20 years and have found that the Enzymedica mutivitamin gives me a lot of energy without added caffeine. Instead, it contains enzymes to give an added spark.

Our bodies uses enzymes to help with normal function.  Our pancreas makes them to aid digestion.  We obtain them from consuming plants that we eat which have not been heated above 118 degrees.  Enzymes are an energy source, that decreases with age.

All Enzymedica Multivitamins also contain ATP (an energy source), probiotics (that aid absorption of nutrients), and Serratiopeptidase.  See last weeks article about how this enzyme helps to reduce inflammation and improve circulation in the body.

Enzymedica mutivitamins contain the following botanicals:

Goji berry is used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a source of antioxidants that support kidneys and liver (1).  Supporting liver benefits blood sugar balance, skin and eye health, along with energy and mood.  Enzymedica multi contains the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of goji berries.

French Red Grape extract is a source of the antioxidant resveratrol. Research studies involving cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, neurological, and liver disorders have shown favorable impacts using resveratrol (2).  The quantity of resveratrol found in this multi is equivalent to 4 glasses of red wine.  Get the benefits without the hangover.  Speaking of hangovers, many find that taking the Enzymedica multivitamin after alcohol consumption greatly reduces unwanted side effects.

Broccoli powder is a source of sulphur compounds, and magnesium containing chlorophyl that improves detoxification of liver.  This multi contains the equivalent of 2/3 cup of broccoli.

Astragalus is another botanical often used in Chinese medicine to support immune system, kidney, spleen, and heart function.  It has been found to stimulate natural killer cells that help to keep us well (3).

Enzymedica has 4 multivitamin options, here is how they differ:

Two daily (60 capsule)- This is a good option for younger folks or people who have a pretty balanced diet and are trying to optimize nutrient consumption to prevent fatigue and dis-ease.

2 capsules taken in the morning can give added energy for the day.

Men's and  Women's suggest 4 capsules daily to obtain approximately double the B vitamins and minerals that can be helpful in supporting cardiovascular and bone health.

Women's 50+ also suggests 4 capsules a day and gives a larger quantity of broccoli powder that aids detoxification of liver to improve hormone balance.
